About

The WINTER AVIATION SWEATER is made from a 14-gauge wool knit and features a 40s bell-shaped front zipper with a brass finish and herringbone twill cotton tape. Designed to maximize insulation while avoiding additional bulk, the WINTER AVIATION SWEATER is based on military specifications and has a close-fitting body and sleeves designed to be layered underneath the Type A-2 leather flight jacket. The raglan sleeves and zip-through front make the sweater easy to slide on and off when layering.

The method of contractors using military specifications to design and craft consumer products was often employed even during wartime.

The WINTER AVIATION SWEATER is based on the VEST, FLYING WINTER, TYPE C-2, as mentioned in the U.S. Army Air Forces, Illustrated Catalog (CLASS 13). The original is made of olive drab worsted yarn. The WINTER AVIATION SWEATER was designed for daily wear in cold climates and seasons, just as it was for pilots in war zones.

The VEST, FLYING WINTER, TYPE C-2 was designated as standard on June 18, 1934, changed to Limited Standard on June 2, 1944, and finally declared obsolete and removed from use on April 10, 1946. During its long period of service, the Type C-2 played a vital role in high-altitude bombing missions across the European Front.

The WINTER AVIATION SWEATER is detailed with a tone-matched ribbed hem and cuffs. Completing the sweater is a single patch pocket.
