PLAID PATTERN MOHAIR SCARF
Joe McCoy MA24107
About
The PLAID PATTERN MOHAIR SCARF is woven on a shuttle machine from nylon-blended spun yarn, recreating the classic texture of vintage mohair garments while maintaining modern durability. Finishing either end of the scarf, tassels have been attached by hand.
The scarf features a plaid pattern, consisting of stripes intersecting at 90-degree angles. Unlike tartans, which present a consistent grid of overlapping squares and are woven in a two-over-two twill pattern, regular plaids may exhibit variations in color, size, and pattern. Tartan designs often create the illusion of blended colors through their unique weaving technique.
In Scottish tradition, "plaid" comes from the Gaelic word that refers to a type of blanket or large kilt worn over the shoulder rather than the pattern itself. The term's use evolved as plaid patterns gained popularity in the Americas and were mass-produced starting in the 1850s. By the 1920s, woollen plaid became a popular pattern for shirting and outdoor goods, and by the 1940s, it was used for women's shirts. Plaid would eventually become a staple in Ivy League styling as well as a notable part of the grunge counterculture movement.
To create the unique texture and vintage atmosphere of the PLAID PATTERN MOHAIR SCARF, it has been made from a blend of mohair, wool, and nylon fiber.
