The Western shirt has its roots in the late 19th century American frontier, where practicality and durability were essential for ranchers, cowboys, and laborers. Key features like snap buttons, pointed yokes, and chest pockets were introduced for functionality, with snap buttons allowing for easy fastening whilse wearing gloves and the recognizable western yoke reinforcing the shirt in the area subject to the most stress.
In the early 20th century, the Western shirt became iconic through Hollywood’s portrayal of cowboys in films, where decorative embroidery, piping, and bold patterns were added for visual appeal. By the mid-20th century the Western shirt moved from rugged frontiers into more fashionable settings, embraced by musicians, urbanites, and various subcultures. One of its most iconic designs, the ‘ridge slant’ pocket was first seen in the 30s, becoming more prominent through the 50s. It derived its name from the distinctive diagonal shape of its chest pockets.
