The HEAVYWEIGHT CREWNECK / AIR FORCE sweatshirt is made from reverse weave cotton and finished with a rubber print AIR FORCE design.

The reverse weave technique, first used in 1938, involves cutting heavy-weight cotton along the cross-grain instead of stitching the sweatshirt vertically. This revolutionary technique eliminates shrinkage and helps maintain the sweatshirt's shape for longer. Sinker machines succeeded loopwheel machines due to their increased speed in fabric production. This Heavyweight Crewneck Sweatshirt is made from 14oz. fabric constructed horizontally, a method typical of sweatshirts from the 1940s, resulting in no shoulder seams. The sweatshirt also features side gussets to prevent width shrinkage after washing, a common construction method seen in sweatshirts from the 1960s and 70s.

Athletic apparel and gear, such as sweatshirts and training uniforms, were an integral part of the USAF training program. In 1969, items like USAF-branded sweatshirts were commonly used for both training and as souvenirs for service members.
