The MISSILE COMBAT CREW SHIRT / STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND was issued only to missile combat crews, specialists responsible for nuclear missile control and launch operations. Entry into these units required advanced technical training and strict operational clearance, and their clothing reflected that exclusivity.
The fabric is a reverse spun twill, a construction in which the yarn twist runs opposite to standard civilian practice. This method was widely used by the U.S. military for durability and stability but rarely survives in modern production. The result is a cloth with a dry, crisp handle and a sharply defined twill line that becomes more pronounced with wear.
Early missile personnel were first equipped with white flight suit style coveralls. This was later replaced by a blue one piece suit, before the Air Force adopted a two-piece configuration in 1967 consisting of a separate shirt and trousers. This marked a practical shift toward a more service-oriented uniform suited to long hours inside hardened missile facilities.
The present garment is based on the first production issue from 1967 and reproduces period correct details taken from surviving originals. Rank insignia, name tapes, and the missileer qualification badge are all applied in keeping with documented examples worn by active crews.
The sleeve patch represents formal commendation awarded for exceptional performance at missile conferences held by the Strategic Air Command. These conferences evaluated operational readiness, technical proficiency, and crew coordination, with awards granted only to high performing units.
Insignia placement follows regulation layout. The rank displayed is Second Lieutenant. The wearer’s name appears on the right chest, with a U.S. Air Force name tape on the left. The missile badge on the pocket signifies qualification in missile control operations or related strategic duties.
