SPECIFICATION

The BASEBALL UNIFORM SHIRT / 7TH AAF is constructed from cotton flannel and finished with 7TH AAF detailing at the chest and a team number at the rear, both applied in traditional felt lettering. Fastened with urea buttons, this piece recreates the visitor uniform worn by Joe DiMaggio while serving with the Seventh Air Force during the Second World War, having enlisted in the Army at the height of his career with the New York Yankees. According to the roster from that period, his number was “4,” rather than “5,” the number later retired by the Yankees in his honor.

In 1944, organized military baseball in Hawaii reached its height. Multiple service leagues operated across Oahu, including the Honolulu League, Hawaii League and the Central Pacific Area League. Among the strongest teams was the 7th Army Air Force, stationed in the Pacific as part of the United States air defence network.

In early June 1944, Brigadier General William J. Flood confirmed that Joe DiMaggio would join the 7th AAF in Hawaii. He arrived alongside Walt Judnich, Dario Lodigiani, Jerry Priddy, Mike McCormick and Ferris Fain, transforming the squad into one of the most talent-heavy military teams assembled during the war.

On June 4, 1944, DiMaggio made his first Hawaii appearance before 21,000 spectators at Honolulu Stadium, hitting a 435-foot home run against the Pearl Harbor Submarine Base team. Days later, he struck a 450-foot drive that cleared the left-field bleachers entirely. Despite illness limiting his season, his presence elevated both attendance and competition across the islands.

The 7th Army Air Force went on to dominate the Hawaii League, finishing 31–4 and securing the championship. The team later represented the Army in the 1944 Army–Navy Service World Series, a widely attended inter-service contest staged before crowds of up to 20,000 servicemen in Pearl Harbor and across the Hawaiian Islands.
