SPECIFICATION

The U.S.N. JACKET HERRINGBONE TWILL is based on a late Second World War Navy utility uniform pattern. It was issued primarily to sailors on shore-based assignments and to the Naval Construction Battalions, known as the Seabees. Unlike deck garments intended for shipboard service, this jacket was designed for land-based work and field conditions.

Its appearance closely resembles the U.S. Army herringbone twill jacket produced under specification PQD 45B, both pieces belonging to the wartime movement into cotton HBT utility uniforms, introduced in the early 1940s to replace earlier denim and khaki fatigue clothing. The Army adopted HBT as a practical field fabric in 1941, and it quickly became standard issue across multiple theaters.

Where the Navy version differs is in the placement of the chest pockets, which sit noticeably lower than on the Army example. A commonly cited explanation is that this adjustment helped prevent the wearer from becoming top-heavy if entering the water, a detail consistent with naval operational thinking.
