Denim shorts grew out of informal use rather than original design and by the late 1960s worn out jeans were commonly cut down for warmer weather, creating a simple and functional alternative to full-length trousers. These early examples were improvised, often finished with a raw hem and varying in length depending on the wearer.

As this practice became more widespread, manufacturers began producing five-pocket shorts from the outset, carrying over the familiar structure of denim jeans into a shorter form. The Lot. 920 / DENIM SHORTS follow this shift, retaining the core construction while refining the proportions.
The pattern is based on the standard five-pocket layout, with a balanced rise and straight leg. The proportions take cues from later twentieth-century examples. The denim is the same cloth used for the Lot. 001XX, woven from yarn spun on Japan’s oldest spinning machine and dyed with indigo through repeated applications to achieve the depth and character associated with the period.
