SPECIFICATION

The JOE MCCOY TEE / KETCHIKAN tee has been made from an 8oz. cotton and features a classic 1950s boxy fit. The binder neck ensures the neckline holds its shape through repeated wear and washing. The KETCHIKAN imagery is hand printed at our Kobe headquarters using traditional manual techniques, achieving the authentic texture and feel of vintage t-shirts.

Proud mascot of Alaska’s rainiest port, the Ketchikan Rainbird is a local legend closely tied to the city’s famously wet climate. The story goes that in 1937 photographer Mitch Cawley was waiting out a heavy rainstorm at the Blue Fox Café in Ketchikan. To pass the time he began whittling a small figure from wood. After several hours he had carved a one-foot-tall bird slumped forward with a weary expression, as if it too had been standing in the rain all day.

The sad little bird soon became known as the Rainbird. Slumped as if soaked through by another passing storm, the figure later appeared in local institutions such as the Ketchikan Yacht Club. After all, anyone can sail in sunshine.
