AVIATOR'S KIT BAG 6505-1

This AVIATOR’S KIT BAG 6505-1 is based on flight crew equipment bags issued during the Second World War to aircrew and paratroopers, used to carry flight gear, parachutes, and essential equipment during training, deployment, and transit. Variants of this design continued to be produced in heavy cotton fabrics through to the mid-1980s, before nylon versions became standard, retaining the same overall shape and function.

This reproduction is informed by close study of early military examples, with subtle adjustments made for modern use. An internal storage pocket has been added to improve organisation while remaining consistent with the original design. The handles and shoulder strap are made from specially commissioned extra-heavy cotton webbing, and the metal hardware has been custom processed to reflect the surface finish and utilitarian character of wartime equipment.

The design prioritised speed and capacity. Aircrew and paratroopers often worked in confined or temporary environments, where equipment needed to be accessed and packed quickly. The wide opening and generous volume allowed parachutes, flight gear, and associated equipment to be handled efficiently while accommodating the substantial loads required for operational use during the period.

During WWII, flight equipment was generally not issued on a permanent basis. Kit bags and associated gear were treated as squadron property and were typically returned at the end of a tour or when an airman was removed from flight status, allowing the equipment to be reissued to another crew. For this reason, original examples are often marked with "PROPERTY OF U.S. GOVERNMENT". While official policy required return, some veterans did retain items through unofficial means.
