HORSEHIDE CAR COAT
Joe McCoy MJ22118
About
A garment that reflects the evolution of Automobile design as it was in the 1930s. By this time, designs had developed away from those of the 1910s and 20s that were highly exposed to the elements, requiring significantly more outerwear to stay comfortable. The introduction of heaters in some vehicles and improvements in aerodynamics and material meant a still very warm, but more stylish jacket could be worn and that was the catalyst of the 30s style car coat seen here.
As mass production scaled up and rolled out, wool-lined jackets with a leather outer were in high demand.
But car ownership was still a status symbol and so too, the black leather Car Coat was associated with class and achievement.
The pattern of this example, from Joe McCoy has been faithfully reproduced by paying close attention to vintage examples in our archive in vegetable-tanned, pigment-finished black Horsehide. The body length is characteristically short and detailed with top-stitched jetted pockets and a horizontal yoke at the front and back. The jacket can be adjusted to the wearer at the cuff and waist, the latter utilizing rounded tab adjusters with Urea buttons.
Internally, the jacket benefits from a custom-produced wool lining that took over 12 months to develop. It is lightly flecked through the combination of very thick and thin yarn resulting in a unique texture and warmth.
