About
BUCO Jackets — Look Better, Fit Better, Are Better. The UTILITY JACKET / LOGO is an Offical Buco Product, constructed from Moleskin Cotton for exceptional Wind Resistance. The wide cut jacket can be cinched at the waist with the included side adjusters for an ideal fit.
During modern Motor Racing’s formative years through the late 30s and 40s team mechanics were mainly outfitted in overalls, on account of the unpredictable and dirty nature of their job. But by the 1950s, motorcycle racing’s Golden Age achieved a new level of popularity. Cutting-edge automotive technology allowed for greater speeds and more advanced racetracks which drew corporate sponsors and a greater level of professionalism.
As pit crews grew and became more sophisticated, with specialized roles, it was no longer necessary for all mechanics and staff to be fully covered. This combined with the proliferation of less formal garments like work shirts and denim jeans that didn’t need protecting from dirt, warranted a new solution.
Mechanics had in various scenarios worn a thigh length jacket since the turn of the century, itself based on a French Chore Coat and it was this style that informed the Utility Jacket of the 50s, shorter in length and more substantial in weight and durability. Constructed of Moleskin Cotton, woven and shorn to create a short, soft pile on one side, offering a level of wind resistance necessary for being track-side.
The left breast branding, here featuring the Buco Helmet logo in an embroidered patch has been an essential fixture of crew uniform since the 1950s.
