U.S. NAVY SUBMARINE JACKET
The Real McCoy's MJ18114
About
The 'Submarine Jacket,' also known as the Coat, Winter, Woolen, was a wool coat issued specifically to U.S. Navy submarine personnel. It was constructed from double-cloth herringbone wool, a fabric commonly used for workwear prior to World War II. The coat was seen in the U.S. Navy 1941 uniform regulations catalogue and would be shortly be replaced by the N-1 Deck Jacket.
Unlike the standard navy blue jackets such as the Pea Coat, which the U.S. Navy usually issued, this coat was distinctive for its rare black color. Due to its exclusive production for pre-war submarine crews, the jacket remained relatively unknown and only a few remain.
The Real McCoy's have meticulously reproduced this garment to the highest standards. Its design is understated, featuring two large front pockets and a collar strap for added warmth. The unique characteristics of the herringbone wool become more pronounced with age and wear, gradually revealing the fabric’s subtle pattern.
